Palm Beach Style

Image

As many of you know, I started working in the Interior Design business as a faux finish artist in Palm Beach, FL many years ago before moving to NYC.  I’m excited to be heading back to Palm Beach for a big project: this time as an interior designer!

Palm Beach has always been a beautiful location to spend the winters (as it was established as a resort by Henry Flagler and incorporated into a city in 1911).  The Breakers Hotel and the Poinciana Hotel have since been luxurious destinations for a winter getaway. Nowadays, the opulent houses, enjoyable lifestyle, and community-oriented sensibility have earned Palm Beach the title of “America’s Best Place to Live” in 2003.

Palm Beach Villa

Estates and villas on Palm Beach tend to be Italian-inspired with columns, romanesque arches, and tiled roofs.  An expansive layout with an open, airy feel and light, cheery colors make for a fine place to relax and enjoy the sun and the water!

Tropical elements and colors are the prevailing trend in Palm Beach, and there is typically a palette of popsicle- pastels and whites. Add some unique sea- inspired accents such as coral, and you have yourself a dramatic entrance, Palm Beach style!

Palm Beach Dining al fresco

Look for woven rattan chairs (similar to the bistro chairs I wrote about earlier!) in some fun patterns and colors, lots of palms and birds-of-paradise, and some classical elements, such as this stone carved table.

Palm Beach is a place to be playful with your colors- such as the lovely salmon-pink striped room (with green toile).  Choose an accent wall or even an accent ceiling!

You can also be playful with your patterns- such as this dramatic, yet elegant zebra staircase.  Keep it from being overwhelming by incorporating whites and greys.

This powder room, from Elle Decor, is a mix of glamour and playfulness.  The shell sink makes this VERY Palm Beach!

Speaking of playfulness and bright colors, Lilly Pulitzer is a mainstay here in Palm Beach.  Her signature Pink-and-green can be seen everywhere!  Believe it or not, she started designing these colorful patterned dresses to hide juice stands from working at an orange juice stand!  Pretty soon, her dresses were even more popular than her fresh-squeezed orange juice, and she began designing full time in 1959.  She is now considered the “Queen of Prep”, since her fashions became very popular with High Society.

Last but not least, here is Barbie, ready for some time in the sun in Palm Beach!  Maybe we’ll see her there!
